The protein transition: shaping the future of meat substitutes
The protein transition is in full swing. More and more companies, consumers, and governments recognize the need for more sustainable, plant-based alternatives to animal proteins. Meat substitutes play a crucial role in this movement.
What is the protein transition?
The protein transition refers to the shift from animal-based to plant-based protein sources in our diet. This change is essential to reducing the ecological footprint of food production and creating a more sustainable food system. Meat substitutes are an important part of this transition, allowing consumers to maintain their protein intake in an environmentally friendly way.
Why are meat substitutes the future?
Meat substitutes are no longer just a niche product. Thanks to innovations in taste, texture, and nutritional value, plant-based alternatives now offer a full-fledged option that rivals traditional meat. More and more consumers are seeking to make conscious choices without compromising on taste and quality.
Benefits of meat substitutes in the protein transition
- Sustainable: Meat substitutes have a significantly lower ecological impact compared to animal meat. They use less land, water, and energy, and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
- Healthy: Plant-based protein sources are rich in fiber and contain no cholesterol, supporting a healthy lifestyle.
- Innovative: Schouten constantly innovates with new plant-based products that perfectly meet the needs of modern consumers.
Future goals: ratio of plant-based to animal proteins
In 2022, the Dutch government set a goal of achieving a balance of 50% animal-based and 50% plant-based proteins by 2030, similar to levels seen in 1950. This goal aligns with the Guidelines for Healthy Nutrition and is supported by the Netherlands Nutrition Centre. Currently, the ratio is 58% animal-based and 42% plant-based (RIVM). To reach the 50/50 target, a further shift towards plant-based consumption is necessary.
By 2050, the Netherlands aims for a ratio of 40% animal-based to 60% plant-based proteins, in line with the Raw Materials Agreement and Climate Agreement. Initiatives such as the Green Protein Alliance and the Transition Coalition Food promote this protein transition, aiming for a more sustainable food system.
Year | Target animal /plant-based ratio |
Current ( 2022) | 58% animal / 42% plant-based |
2030 | 50% animal / 50% plant-based |
2050 | 40% animal / 60% plant-based |
