Tempeh today launches ‘Tempeh for education’ project
Bangalore, India. Tempeh today, in partnership with The Freedom Project India
and supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), is proud to announce
the launch of the “Tempeh for Education (MFU) Project.” This impactful initiative aims to combat child labor and foster social and economic empowerment for women in vulnerable communities through decentralized tempeh production.
The Micro Fermentation Unit (MFU) concept
At the heart of this project is the Micro Fermentation Unit (MFU), a compact, plug-and-play incubation chamber for tempeh production. Designed for single-operator use, each MFU can produce up to 100 kg of tempeh per week. Through this project, women receive training, resources, and a guaranteed buyback program, offering them stable, fair pay while equipping them to build a local customer base as independent entrepreneurs.
Opportunities for economic and personal growth
The MFU Project, in collaboration with impact partner The Freedom Project India, offers participants more than just economic opportunity. They also gain access to educational programs for their children, after-school tutoring, and meal support. Each participant joins self-help groups that provide essential training in financial literacy, language skills, and awareness of government programs. This holistic support helps women achieve not only financial independence but also build sustainable, resilient futures for their families. The project was realized with the support of: Fair Factory Development Fund.
Tempeh’s health benefits: a nutritious, affordable
choice
Tempeh, a protein-rich food with Indonesian origins, is central to this project. It is an affordable, nutritious option, higher in protein than chicken, high in fiber, low in fat, and rich in B vitamins, including B12, and iron. Tempeh today aims to raise awareness of tempeh’s benefits, addressing nutritional needs in school meal programs and throughout India.
A commitment to social development through collaboration
Henk Schouten, Director of Tempeh today, stated: “Our MFU Project reflects our commitment to social and economic development, providing real opportunities for women to achieve financial independence. Through this project, we offer vital education, resources, and income to empower women and create a ripple effect of positive change in their communities. With the support of our partners and the Dutch government, we are working toward a future where economic opportunity and empowerment are accessible to all.”
Project launch event
Tempeh today invites government officials, industry partners, and supporters to join the project’s launch event on November 13, 2024. Project site visits will follow on November 14, showcasing the transformative potential of this initiative.
